That's definitely a valid preference, ...Tokyo,

That's definitely a valid preference, and there are "old things" in Japan I certainly love, too. But within practical limits, for me. I don't see the need for widespread use of mechanical typewriters or horse-drawn carriages, charming though they may be. Still, there can be decent reasons for some things. This may not be the reason fax machines are widely used in Japan, but they are more secure than email, for example.

Blue Shoehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08474339066187087545noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503203977655953303.post-85978489078901803992014-08-15T19:58:32.040-04:002014-08-15T19:58:32.040-04:00I like the fact Japan doesn't drop "the o...I like the fact Japan doesn't drop "the old" once something new comes along, the way that western countries seem to.

The ancient along with the ultra-modern. Rickshaws and electric cars, cassettes and MP3, faxes and snail-mail along with email! But the most technological country in the world should probably be feeding itself with nanobots or something.

Sophelia - Oh yeah! The two schools I worked at had whiteboards, but I did see a lot of blackboards at other schools. Electronic ones, though - wow! I would have loved to see those.

And yes, web design! That would have been another good one for me to talk about. It's like everything is optimized for mobile viewing in Japan, to the neglect of regularly-formatted websites...Blue Shoehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08474339066187087545noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503203977655953303.post-58272142180447040322014-08-15T00:11:13.100-04:002014-08-15T00:11:13.100-04:00Blackboards. My city board of education bought electronic white boards for every elementary school a few years ago. Most ended up in storage because no one knew how to use them, and more than a few ended up being written on with white board markers which ruined the screens. The the BoE decided to provide ipads to each JHS, but of course the schools didn't have wifi, so they were just expensive paper weights. I could start ranting about Japanese web design, but if I do that I'll never stop, so in short, I'm totally on the low tech side of this one!Sopheliahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09891110033136610235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-503203977655953303.post-73284064834183828852014-08-14T09:39:28.542-04:002014-08-14T09:39:28.542-04:00I find the toilets and showers to be pretty nice. ...I find the toilets and showers to be pretty nice. Maybe I just spend too much time in Tokyo. Chopsticks aren't so bad. I find certain types of cooking easier with chopsticks than western instruments. So there! And damn you Matsuko Deluxe will haunt my dreams for eternity.Gobblerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03949346405183981342noreply@blogger.com
